Drawing, Cosmos, early 20th century

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Sophia L. Crownfield.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It has been able to spend time at the museum on loan from Decker Library.

It is dated early 20th century. Its medium is brush and gouache on white paper. It is a part of the Exhibitions department.

Cheney Brothers described Cosmos as “a decorative material used for the manufacture of kimonos, sofa cushions, bedspreads, lambrequins, etc.” The design of freely scattered flowers, some fully open and others with only buds, retains the freshness of Crownfield’s style, as seen in the similarity between her color study drawing and the finished silk textile.

It is credited Maryland Institute College of Art, Decker Library, B6F329_Cosmos.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 34.6 × 49.2 cm (13 5/8 × 19 3/8 in.)

It is inscribed

S.L. Crownfield No. 16
