Textile, early 20th century

This is a Textile. It was designed by Sophia L. Crownfield and manufactured by Cheney Brothers.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It has been able to spend time at the museum on loan from Decker Library.

It is dated early 20th century. Its medium is silk. It is a part of the Exhibitions department.

This green and pink printed silk (right) has a similar grouping of chrysanthemum flowers as in the drawing above, showing how Crownfield worked out her patterns even at an early stage of the design process. Cheney Brothers suggested that lightweight silks like this one be used for “kimonos and bed quilts and for light decorative purposes.” The Ladies Home Journal published a silk coverlet made from this fabric in February 1911, suggesting it for a “chrysanthemum room.”

It is credited Maryland Institute College of Art, Decker Library, B6F342_Chrysanthemum silk pink on green.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 53.3 × 40.6 cm (21 × 16 in.)
