Inscribed: in graphite, upper right: Aug 1844; in graphite, verso upper margin: 2 enclosed by dots - this part is illuminated (yellow) by the sun, the trees in front casting a shadow over the remaining part / This drawing was taken in autumn very many leaves having falle, revealing many things that would otherwise be hidden. / The red paint on the mill is much worn and consequently quite a warm picturesque color / There is a great distance between 5 and 6 / 5 very rich color; in graphite, verso upper right: Oct. 1844; in graphite, verso center left: willow / willows; in graphite, verso center: 6 / pear apple / red sandy soil / 5 / steep bank; in graphite, verso center right: 2 / red red / unpainted grey / grey / red paint / grey stone / grey / willows / grey / coarse gravel
