Inscribed: in graphite, lower left: Sep. 1854 / Mt Desert; in graphite, lower right: A suggestive arrangement of sky &c / The great mass at the left was a dark cold grey or purple / and the hills and distance were wrapped in the same / unpromising gloom while the house caught a warm / reflected light from the open sky which was bright and / cheerful. The shaded cloud was uniformly dark - the / others lighter and warmer and all were fringed with a warm / reflected glow
